Thyroid Eye Disease

Patients with certain thyroid problems can develop eye disorders also. This is because of inflammation of the tissues around the eye which can cause bulging of the eyeball itself (exophthalmos), and also pressure in the eye cavity which may ultimately affect vision.
Endoscopic sinus surgery can be used to reduce these problems by opening the wall between the eyes and the sinuses, allowing the inflamed tissue to expand into the sinus cavity, causing reduction in pressure on the eye, the muscles that control the eye, and the optic nerve (orbital decompression).
